An important first step which is also a means of reinforcing the roles and obligations of each party in the mentoring relationship is to encourage the mentors and mentees to draw up a mentoring agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to:
  • Clarify the respective roles and expectations of mentors and mentees;
  • Set ground rules for discussion of diversity issues, in particular gender effects;
  • Provide a framework for how the relationship will work, eg frequency of meetings, length of meetings and duration of the program, mentoring activities;
  • Provide for a no-fault dissolution of the relationship by either party.
