Task for Group 3:

  • What do you see as being the key issues in each case study?
  • What are the possible assumptions that could be made about:
    • The person in relation to their lifestyle and interests;
    • Academic performance;
    • Competencies; and
    • Potential
  • What attributions could be made about the possible causes of the person’s past behaviour?
  • To what extent are these assumptions and attributions based on gender stereotypes?
  • What are the implications, if any, for:
    • The questions that might be asked in an interview?
    • The extra information that would be obtained in an interview?
    • The ultimate recruitment decision?

Groups 1 and 2 to provide feedback on their analyses.

Group 3 to listen and analyse responses in terms of:

  • What did you see as being the key issues in each case study?

  • What assumptions were made about:

    • The person in relation to their lifestyle and interests;
    • Academic performance;
    • Competencies; and
    • Potential.
  • What attributions were made about the possible causes of the person’s past behaviour?

  • To what extent were these assumptions and attributions based on gender stereotypes?

  • What were there differences between the groups and between the case studies. To what extent were these differences influenced by the gender of the person?

  • What are the implications, if any, for:

    • The questions proposed to be asked?
    • The extra information that would have been obtained?
    • The ultimate recruitment decision?

If there are gender differences in the groups (eg Group 1 is all male and Group 2 is all female), also comment on any differences noted in the approach each took to the problem.

Final wrap up: Summary of stereotypes etc (using notes attached).
