This is the first step in the measurement and evaluation process. Having decided on your own vision of management commitment, you can design an initial measurement strategy.

  • This should include the three key components of management commitment: "knowledge", "passion/energy" and "skills".
  • Measurement should be conducted at three levels with:
    • Individual managers. This should include a self assessment of a manager’s own knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and a reporting of key behaviours and activities, for example, consultations with women, activities initiated individual learning etc;
    • A management peer review. This should include an assessment of the level of commitment of peers and the level of support received within this group for a focus on employment outcomes for women; and
    • Employee perceptions. This should include perceptions of management commitment at all three levels, views about what needs to be improved, and general views about managers, for example, level of loyalty to manager/organisation (these views are critical for longer term evaluation).

Tips:
  • Focus on assessment at the peer group level and the immediate level below;
  • Focus on the extent to which there is evidence of commitment through the integration of workplace issues for women into core business activities.
