How can this workshop be used?
This workshop can be used effectively as part of a senior management or lead team process to identify what the key gender issues are, to achieve initial buy-in, and to help develop individual and organisational plans.

Expected outcomes

  • A commitment to provide effective leadership on gender equity issues.
  • Identification of current gaps and the impact these have on business outcomes.
  • An understanding of what leading organisations have done to achieve success.
  • A shared vision in terms of workforce profile and workplace culture.
  • Identification of barriers to change.
  • An action plan.

Presentation

  1. Introduction by senior manager to the issues in your organisation
    • Outline of where your organisation now stands and where it would like to be.
  2. Overview of Gender Issues
    • What has changed at work, including workforce demographics and the war for talent?
    • What has changed in people’s personal lives? How have aspirations and expectations changed?
    • Why do women and their employment issues matter to your organisation?
    • Are their links with organisational indicators?
  3.  How does your organisation look now? (Presentation of data)
    • Compare your organisation with other similar organisations and leading Australian and international organisations on major gender measures.
    • Ask managers to report their findings from the interviews.
  4. Gap Analysis - Interactive Session
    • Group 1: Identification of major gaps in your organisation.
      1. First consider: Where do we want to be?
      2. Identify the critical gaps, based on analysis of current situation (use measures and interview data) and progress.
    • Group 2: Impact analysis of past strategies.
      1. What strategies have we used and what impact have they had?
      2. What have been the major barriers to achieving success?
    • Groups to report back and output summarised.
  5. How can we make a difference?
    Development of a draft plan: small groups
    • Objectives and expected outcomes.
    • Major barriers to effective implementation.
    • Key actions to ensure success:
      • as an individual;
      • as a management team;
      • as an organisation (consider these areas: leadership, culture, processes/systems and flexibility in work design and career options).
