Section A
Sample Workplace: Wilson’s Electro-Goods and Appliances

This global manufacturing, sales and marketing firm has an Australian MD who reports to the Australasian Director. All company policies are global and have generally been adapted to meet Australian EO and industrial laws.

With 320 Australian staff in one location, the training and development area comprises 3 staff and also uses external consultants.

Currently training to assist senior executives with conducting performance reviews is being run by an internal trainer. A series of OH & S up-dates for all staff have been planned for the next month. The external trainer doing this work is introducing the new bullying policy under OH & S as well as making drawing out the links between discrimination and bullying. This training has been organised as the company has recently had to deal with a series of bullying issues that resulted in the female apprentices being alienated, intimidated and the source of constant rumors, on the basis of gender.

A cross company IT training program for all staff introducing computer system changes whilst simultaneously rolling out the new e-mail policy that covers off email harassment and mis-use of company equipment, is also underway.

Finally the internal trainers are running a recruitment workshop for line managers who recruit staff. The need for this has emerged recently with 2 unsuccessful job applicants lodging EO and Privacy complaints.

Sally Cadwell is responsible for the training area. Sally reports to the ER Manager, responsible for all human resource functions, Ian Henderson.

With the unexpected recruitment training having to be run and the use of the external bullying expert to do the OH & S up-dates, the ER budget has been really stretched. While Sally is adamant about the current schedule, Ian is looking for ways to continue but cut costs.
