Introduction to Sample Workplace: NSEW Mining Corporation NSEW Mining Corporation, having recently recruited 4 new graduates recorded in an ABS survey on 1st February 2002 it employed 2920 permanent staff . Involved in gold, lead and zinc projects across Australia and in Asia the company was always keen to recruit new graduates across a range of disciplines. CEO Warrick Vladamir never missed an opportunity to highlight the importance of “fresh blood, new ideas and eager young faces” despite the fact that HR staff were entirely comfortable with his descriptive intent. That aside he did each year take a personal interest in the corporation’s new graduates, meeting with them twice during their first 12 months, when they were brought together to do a series of development exercises. Recruited with dual degrees, Jay Hava (Commerce & Law), Katarina Kos (Marketing and Media), Marcus Trunch (Commerce and Environmental Science) and Cathy Vu (Commerce and Asian Languages) began their careers with NSEW on 1st Feburary 2001. Placed on the company’s Graduate Training Program each graduate would spend their first 12 months working in 2 divisions and at 2 mine sites; 3 months per placement. They would be placed in permanent roles at the company’s discretion at the end of the one year Program. The Graduate salary scheme ran for 3 years in total. Frieda Morgan ran the Graduate Training Program from the corporate HR department. She also acted as a mentor for each graduate throughout the Program and ultimately identified the range of roles that they could potentially fill. The final decision about placements however, was made by her boss Arthur McKenzie – Director HR. Frieda’s husband Ken, having worked for NSEW for 42 years, retired in mid 2001 when he turned 65. Frieda and Ken had recently discussed that maybe it was time for her retire too. Proceed to Section B |
