Pay Power and
Position: Beyond the 2008 Australian Census of Women in Leadership At the executive manager level, women are being funnelled into support roles and remain underrepresented in key leadership positions. Women hold only 7% of key management personnel positions, and are more likely to hold positions that have a low likelihood of being key management personnel such as human resources and public affairs. 2008 EOWA Australian Census of Women in
Leadership Women chaired just four boards (2%) and held 8.3% of board director positions, a decline from 8.7% in 2006 and just 0.1 percentage point higher than in 2004. This is lower than other comparable countries and the EC average (10.3%). Just over half of all ASX200 boards have no women board directors. Applying the principle what gets measured gets managed, the Census is designed to establish accurate statistics to enable international benchmarking. It identifies the status of women in the most senior leadership positions for the top 200 organisations listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. The Census uses methodology, developed by the prestigious and influential US based organisation, Catalyst, which has been adapted for Australia and approved by the Australian Commonwealth Statistical Clearing House.
