After four productive and successful years in the role, the previous
EOWA Director, Anna McPhee, left the Agency at the end of November 2008.
In the interim, Mairi Steele has been appointed as Acting Director.
Mairi
has been involved in workplace relations for
nearly thirty years. Before coming to Australia she lectured, researched
and published in the areas of industrial relations, human
resource management, equal opportunities and labour law at the
Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow in Scotland.
Since joining the Australian Public Service in 1994, Mairi has acquired
considerable workplace relations policy experience, including in the
areas of discrimination in the workplace, pay equity and workplace
flexibility.
She is a co-author of 'Changes at Work - The 1995 Australian Workplace
Industrial Relations Survey' and was closely involved in 'Unfinished
Business', the independent review of the Affirmative Action Act in
1998-99, which culminated in the establishment of the Equal Opportunity for Women in the
Workplace Agency.
Mairi was also a Senior Commonwealth Advocate in the
Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and has
represented the Australian Government at the International Labour
Conference in Geneva.
